The Ministry of the Environment Announces Concrete Commitment from Various Companies to Reduce the Impact of Plastics

Unilever, Amcor, Coca-Cola, Mall Plaza, Nestlé, Soprole, and Resiter committed to take actions to eliminate problematic single-use containers; to make them 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable; or that they use recycled material in their manufacture, among others.

There are four commitments to which the Chilean Plastics Pact founding partner companies adhered today as to reduce the impact of this material in Chile by 2025, through elimination, reuse, recycle, and innovation. This is a new step for the initiative that was undersigned last April, and is led by the Chilean Ministry of the Environment and Fundación Chile.

The companies Unilever, Amcor, Coca-Cola, Plaza Mall, Nestlé, Soprole, and Resiter took on four specific commitments to avoid the inappropriate use of plastics during a ceremony headed by the Metropolitan Region’s Regional Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment, Diego Riveaux, and Fundación Chile’s President, José Ramón Valente.

First, they agreed to take action to eliminate plastic packaging and single-use utensils that are problematic or unnecessary by redesigning and innovating. Second, that 100% of plastic containers and packaging must be designed to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable.

Third, that 1/3 of domestic and non-domestic plastic containers and packaging must be effectively recycled, reused, or composted and, fourth, that plastic containers and packaging must have, among their different formats an average of 25% of recycled material. All these commitments shall be fulfilled by 2025.

“This is an ambitious agreement that will allow us to move faster in our efforts to reduce the impact of plastic in our country, by eliminating, reusing, recycling, and innovating with this material. In addition, this is in line with the law that bans the delivery of plastic bags in the national territory’s commerce and the implementation of the law of the producers’ extended responsibility (REP)”, held Carolina Schmidt, minister of Environment.

The president of Fundación Chile, José Ramón Valente, meanwhile emphasized, that “we must change our focus towards innovations and business models that can be designed around plastic, and keeping this material in use. This way, we will not only generate medium and long-term benefits for the environment, but we will also have the opportunity to capture a great economic opportunity”.

Andrés Pesce, VP of Business and Sustainability at FCh stressed that “the Plastics Pact is a very clear example of the double change of paradigm that we are promoting: the generation of new trajectories of circular development that decouple economic growth from the use of finite resources, plus the collaboration of multiple public and private organizations that voluntarily work for the fulfillment of this ambitious common goal”.

This initiative is part of the global network of the Plastics Pact launched in 2018 by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. The first pact was launched in the United Kingdom, the second in France, and Chile is the third worldwide. In addition to the companies, the Ministry of the Environment, and Fundación Chile, the Association of Municipalities for Environmental Sustainability (AMUSA), the Agency for Sustainability and Climate Change, the Packaging Management System, Plastic Oceans Chile, and Co-Inventa, Corfo and Ministry of Economy are also participating.

After announcing their commitments, the group will be working on the planning of a Roadmap to 2025, which will be completed by December of this year, and will be announced under the framework of the Cop25.

Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s head in Latin America, Luis Santiago, pointed out the important step of the Chilean Plastics Pact in favor of its pioneering efforts in installing a new circular economy of plastics in Latin America. “The Ellen MacArthur Foundation celebrates the announcement of these ambitious commitments that will empower businesses, government, organizations, and citizens to collaborate on innovative solutions that will address the plastic challenge from prevention”.

During the activity, there was a called for more companies and organizations-NGOs, universities, consumer associations, municipalities, among others, to join the challenge. The goal is to have a high representativeness of the plastic packaging ecosystem to build and implement the Roadmap with them.

New Image

During the event, Circula el Plástico, the new image of the Chilean Plastics Pact was presented. Its slogan will be “more planet, less waste” and it seeks to bring citizens closer to the challenge of moving forward towards a circular economy.
