An innovative light bulb replacement model that allowed a massive purchase of efficient lighting by reducing obstacles such as elevated costs.

Cambia el Foco: People’s Route Towards Energy Efficiency

The beneficiary entities achieved up to 50% of savings in their yearly electricity consumption, and the program as a whole, allowed lowering the emissions of 10,000 tons of CO2 per year.

For the last 40 years the levels of energy consumption and production have doubled, and with that, greenhouse-gas-emissions have increased critically in the planet. In Chile, our energy consumption quadrupled in the last decade, doubling the number of emissions.

In 2015, the Chilean Ministries of the Environment and Energy and Fundación Chile took on the UN Environment, GEF, and U4E’s global challenge to join and implement En.Lighten in the country. This project has been implemented in more than 65 countries, and aims to accelerate and strengthen the efficient the local lighting market by carrying out several strategies such as citizen action campaigns, innovation, and new business models.

Cambia el Foco Escuelas y Liceos 2018” helped out over 200 municipal and subsidized schools, distributing 4 LED bulb packages, that turn out to being approximately 230,000 LED bulbs, reaching a total of 73,000 students and school communities.

As part of this global challenge and hoping to contribute with the national enterprise of reducing electricity consumption in 20% by 2025, they created “Cambia el Foco”; it literally translates as “Change the Focus”, but is also a Chilean word play for “Change the Light Bulb”. It consists in an innovative model to replace light bulbs promoting a massive LED lighting purchase that is viable by reducing its costs and educating on its benefits. This endeavor was executed by the Ministries of Energy and the Environment along with Philips Lighting and Fundación Chile.

A travelling lamp shop launched the campaign starting its journey in Providencia and making its way through other areas in Santiago. As a result, the lightings of several emblematic facilities such as Hospital Calvo Mackenna, Instituto Nacional, and Palacio Cousiño were replaced. In addition, LED bulbs were sold at low costs in 15 Dartel branches across Chile and at Copec gas stations.

During 2018, we implemented the phase that targeted the educational community, “Cambia el Foco Escuelas y Liceos 2018” helped out over 200 municipal and subsidized schools, distributing 4 LED bulb packages, that turn out to being approximately 230,000 LED bulbs, reaching a total of 73,000 students and school communities.

Cambia el Foco accomplished outstanding results; the beneficiary entities achieved savings in their electricity consumption of up to 50% per year, and the program as a whole, lowered the emissions of 10,000 tons of CO2 per year. Nevertheless, the crusade on energy efficiency and citizen education continues non-stop; the project’s next stage aims to promote the use of efficient technology in home appliances.
