Chile Saludable (Healthy Chile) is the result of the collaboration between Fundación Chile, Elige Vivir Sano (Choose Living Healthy), CollectGfK and Fundación de la Familia (Family Foundation), all which created a strategic alliance to develop new contents and identify opportunities for innovation related to the habits, lifestyles and nutritionofthe population that tend to meet the challenge of fighting obesity in the country.
This version is focused on the role of the foods industry to promote a better nutrition and build a society towards healthiness; since, as discussed, the serious obesity problems we have are caused – to a great extent – by bad eating habits that result in the consumption of high amounts of critical nutrients that endanger health.
According to the study, the opportunities to innovate are the development of healthier products, the reduction of the amount of critical nutrients and the incorporation of new natural ingredients that provide health and welfare benefits, among others.
Likewise, innovative preservation technologies-
that contribute to the harmlessness of foods, to the extension of their useful life and to optimize the quality and stability of their nutritional properties- were identified; as well as business models that benefit health and wellness, market quality products and services that promote habits and a lifestyle that secure the access of the most vulnerable sectors of the population [to those products].
First, it explains the relevance of companies that recognize the healthy innovation opportunities and challenge the production and marketing of their products. Then, the role of the industry in the promotion of healthy habits and lifestyle and the reduction of overweight and obesity. Also, the fact that the existing synergies between the public and private sector generate many individual and social benefits for all those involved.
«The food industry plays a key role in the improvement of food supply and promotionof healthy habits and lifestyle«, said Andrés Barros, manager of Fundación Chile’s Food and Biotechnology department.
«The role that the industry has in the food market contributes Government efforts to generate public policies, plans and programs to fight obesity and overweight», said Pauline Kantor, Director of Elige Vivir Sano.
