Google, Fundación Chile, and Chicos.net Introduce Artificial Intelligence to Chilean Classrooms

  • The organizations implemented “HumanIA”, a learning proposal that trained more than 3,000 teachers in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay to bring AI closer in an accessible and didactic way.
  • In Chile, 685 people were trained and three free synchronous meetings for teachers will be held in 2024.

685 teachers were trained to bring artificial intelligence in an accessible and didactic way to Chilean classrooms thanks to HumanIA, a program developed by Chicos.net and Fundación Chile, with the support of Google.Org.

The initiative, which offers resources, tools, training and interactive activities, invites reflection on the uses and advances of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and has already trained more than 3,000 educators in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay to work on artificial intelligence issues with their students. The HumanIA educational experience was also carried out with a group of 45 schools in these countries, directly reaching more than 1,000 students. This 2024, the work agenda expands and proposes to deepen AI training in the educational communities of the country and the region.

The proposal is aimed at students and teachers, and was also designed for adults and families who want to enter this new world that is gradually becoming part of everyday life, with the objective of promoting the knowledge that will allow them to understand the transformations brought about by this new technology,

“AI is present in various aspects of our daily lives and its penetration will continue to intensify, opening up new opportunities. We must prepare ourselves and promote reflection on how we participate and coexist in a responsible, safe and ethical manner with this technology, while at the same time taking advantage of its potential. For this reason, Fundación Chile felt it was essential for us to participate in HumanIA to promote a people-centered use of AI, developing teaching skills and providing activities, proposals and the necessary support to promote understanding of these transformations in the classroom”, said Valentina Quiroga, Human Development Manager of Fundación Chile”.

To carry out this project, Google.org – Google’s philanthropic arm – provided financial support with a $100,000 fund to carry out the project. Nicolás Schubert, Manager of Public Policy and Government Affairs for Google Chile, explained: “HumanIA is a unique initiative that has the potential to transform education and prepare students for the future. With the support of Google.org and the education community, this initiative can inspire the next generation of AI leaders and change the world. AI is a catalyst for learning, opening up a world of possibilities for students, being active agents of their own learning, exploring the possibilities of this technology and developing the skills to lead change“.

The project presents six chapters guided by HumanIA, an artificial intelligence that gives a first-person account of the characteristics of systems like her. Each one addresses different aspects of AI, such as art and creativitylanguage, and ethical challenges. The proposal also includes activities and experiences to understand the scope and implications that this technology can have in the development of the current and future lives of young people and adolescents. The project was developed with the participation of experts in the area who provided support and knowledge on the subject.

In Chile, synchronous training workshops on AI comprehension, application and use of the platform were held for secondary school teachers. In total, five workshops were held between May and June, in which 685 people participated. Four of these talks were virtual; two of them were organized with educarchile one was done along with the Network of Leading Schools and another with the Innovation Center of the Ministry of Education. The on-site workshop was held together with the Liceo Bicentenario Matilde Huici Navas of Peñalolén. For 2024, the work agenda expands and proposes to deepen AI training in the educational communities of the country and the region. In the case of our country, Fundación Chile will hold three free synchronous meetings aimed at teachers in order to disseminate content on various aspects of Artificial Intelligence: introductory concepts to its operation, opportunities and ethical dilemmas, creative possibilities and innovative uses in education.
