Facing climate change NetZero-Nature positive
Actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change

ConvergEN+: Energy and Nature Positive

The initiative, framed within the global Net Zero and Nature Positive Accelerator program funded by the GEF, seeks to strengthen Chilean institutions, public policies, and regulations to accelerate development pathways with net-zero emissions and nature-positive outcomes.

ConvergEN+: Energy and Nature Positive
Context

Why move towards a Net Zero economy?

Climate change, along with biodiversity loss and pollution, constitute the “triple planetary crisis“, a concept that refers to the interrelationship of these three major problems and their devastating effects:

  • Ecosystem instability.
  • Deterioration of people’s quality of life.
  • Significant economic losses.

Globally, efforts are being made to address this crisis, such as the Paris Agreement, where each country commits to reducing its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions through mitigation and adaptation actions to climate change. Nationally, and in addition to adhering to these treaties, the Framework Law on Climate Change stands out, which aims for Chile to be a carbon-neutral country by no later than 2050.

A new approach

Ten years after the Paris Agreement, science (IPCC 2022) demonstrated that with current trends, global warming will not be limited, leading to new approaches to accelerate climate action. This includes the initiative “Accelerating the Transition to a Net Zero and Nature Positive Economy in Chile (NZNP)“, framed within the global Net Zero and Nature Positive Accelerator program, led by UNEP and funded by the GEF. In Chile – one of the 4 countries selected to implement these types of programs – it is led by the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Finance.

Objectives

What does the Net Zero and Nature Positive economy initiative seek?

The initiative seeks to strengthen Chilean institutions, public policies, and regulations to accelerate development pathways with net-zero emissions and nature-positive outcomes. In addition to:

  • Reinforce the coherence, alignment, and complementarity (and their measurement) of the various public-private instruments and tools related to climate change.
  • Incorporate nature dimensions into the climate change financing strategy to transition to a net-zero nature-positive financing strategy.
  • Promote a global decarbonization roadmap for energy demand (industrial, domestic, commercial, and public energy).
  • Build capacity and raise awareness about energy demand decarbonization alternatives.
