Water Scenarios 2030 has generated more than 11 publications with the aim of contributing to a better diagnosis, governance, and management of water resources in Chile.
The initiative seeks to promote a Water Transition that enables a drastic reduction of the country’s water gap and water risk, accelerating the implementation of structural changes, innovative solutions, policy proposals, and co-constructed water management instruments.
A combination of factors and situations has gradually filled Chile’s water “glass.” Different indicators of scarcity, extreme events experienced in recent years, and the first climate change projections presented in various national and international studies were the signals that came together with the expressed need of multiple stakeholders to find measures, actions, and solutions that make it possible to move toward water security and sustainability by 2050.
Chile appears among the 30 countries with the highest water risk in the world by 2025 (WRI, 2015). Hence the significance of the Water Scenarios 2030 initiative, which prioritizes water as a vital element for life and development.
One of the main conclusions reached by the initiative in the development of “Water Transition: The Future of Water in Chile” (EH2030, 2019) is that, if the current trajectory in water resource management continues, the possible scenario for 2030 is catastrophic. Therefore, it is essential to change the way the problem is addressed and to do so with a comprehensive approach.
In the face of fragmented water institutions and poor resource management that prevents an effective response to scarcity and climate change, Water Scenarios 2030 works to promote and coordinate the creation of a national water policy, with the participation of all sectors and an active leadership role by the State.
Through a process of dialogue and multisectoral co-construction with key actors from the public and private sectors, NGOs, communities, and academia, it seeks to:
