Context

Why invest in sustainable fishing coves?

Currently in Chile, fishing coves are facing a major and complex environmental problem. More than 50% of fisheries are overexploited or collapsed. This intersects with social vulnerability, as 76% of fishing coves are located in rural areas with high levels of poverty and precarious conditions.

In this context, it is imperative to accelerate the transition toward more sustainable fishing, making it possible to conserve biological diversity and guarantee fishing activity for future generations.

Objectives

How do they seek to accelerate the transition toward sustainable fishing?

The initiative, which is part of the Coastal Community Network program promoted by BHP Foundation, seeks to:

  • Sustainability: Promote fishing practices that contribute to the health of marine ecosystems, encouraging the protection and/or recovery of sensitive commercial species.
  • Productivity: Promote sustainable production by increasing productive and commercial efficiency, encouraging diversification of fishing/aquaculture activities, and generating new or improved economic opportunities for the local community.
  • Collaboration: Develop and implement collaborative development models among various public and private organizations, placing local communities at the center of the Program.
